This article presents a case study at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and graphic design, with a special emphasis on information visualization. The primary aim is to demonstrate the integration of AI into graphic design as an innovative tool in the educational process, enhancing the effectiveness and aesthetic appeal of data visualizations. The study focuses on a data visualization project of Porto city’s temperature, Portugal, from 1911 (the founding year of the University of Porto) to the present, with projections extending to 2030. This project serves as a practical example of how AI can be effectively used in the analysis of long-term climate data, complemented by graphic design that reflects the stylistic trends of each decade.

The importance of this study lies in its ability to tackle the challenges of the Big Data era, translating complex data sets into visually comprehensible formats. AI plays a dual role in this transformation: enhancing the processing and analysis of large data sets and automating aspects of the design process to improve efficiency and reduce errors. This allows designers to focus more on creative exploration, while also providing a valuable learning opportunity for students.

Methodologically, the paper details the interdisciplinary approach adopted in the Porto project. Historical temperature data was paired with AI algorithms for predictive analysis and identifying climatic patterns. Graphic design students then visualized these patterns, aligning them with the design aesthetics of their respective decades. This methodological fusion illustrates AI’s ability to inform design choices and ensure accuracy, while respecting historical trends in graphic design.
